Reference Librarian Manual

We are encouraging honors students to set up an appointment in WC Online. They have to create an account the first time. This will allow them to receive confirmations, reminders, and cancelations (if needed). You will be emailed the appointment confirmation as well.

Since we are working remotely, please set up a WebEx meeting with the student. Include the student's email in the attendee box. They will receive an email with directions and a link to attend the meeting with you.

Consider the first meeting as an initial consultation where you can get clarification about the student's research question and explore questions the research should seek to answer. This should help set up a rapport with the student and avoid doing a lot of preparation for a no-show. With the student, you can set a path for the research.

  • Students are learning how to conduct a search strategy. Share with them your thought process, how did you think to use this combination of terms to get these results?
  • Because of the depth of research, it's OK to give them a few sources to keep them moving forward with their project.
  • They may have only tried the basic databases: Academic Search Complete and JSTOR, and general Google searches. Lead them to other collections.
  • Students are looking for that magical unicorn article that answers the question. Be sure to help them understand that they will be compiling information from multiple sources to help provide insight and help them analyze their topic.
