This guide was created for use with the Library Explorer Adventure Packs (LEAP) received Spring semester 2025.

Circulation of Backpack Policies

A Texas Children in Nature Network Program

 

Each Library Explorer Adventure Pack (LEAP) includes field guides, books, tools, and equipment related to a specific nature theme. The backpacks will also give access for two (2) adults (13 years and up) to any of the three State Parks in Fort Bend, Galveston, and Austin County.

We hope that you enjoy the use of the backpacks. To ensure that other patrons also fully enjoy the backpacks, please follow the circulation policy below.

Circulation of Backpack Policy

  • Backpacks may be checked out for two (2) weeks.
  • Backpacks are renewable only if no one is waiting for it.
  • Backpacks may be placed on hold and must be picked up within three (3) days. Backpacks are only available for check-out at the specific designated libraries. They are not part of the inter-library loan system. If you are interested in other themes, please visit one of the partner libraries who host them.
  • A $1.00 fine per day will be accrued for late returns on these items.
  • Backpacks must be returned to a Circulation staff member at the Circulation Desk instead of the book drop.
  • All items, including the journal, must be returned with the backpack.
  • Please return the backpacks, and all the items in them, clean and dry. Please kindly wipe down any activity sheets.
  • Please complete the “Return Survey” upon the return or completion of the use of the Backpack. The data collected will help us modify or expand the LEAP program.

LEAP Goals and Information

****The goal of the Library Explorer Adventure Pack (LEAP) Program is to connect children and their families to nature and the outdoors while developing new skills that promote physical activity, healthy habits and behaviors, mental health, and sustainable living.

Texas Children in Nature Network – Gulf Coast Region (TCiNN-GCR) is excited to launch the Library Explorer Adventure Pack (LEAP) in libraries across the Liberty, Harris, Montgomery, and Galveston Counties in the Houston and Galveston area. Featuring 10 unique nature themes, the backpacks are filled with engaging activities, journals, books, field guides, tools, and equipment to encourage families to get active and explore the outdoors. They will be available for a two-week check-out period to library patrons. 

In addition, families who visit any of the three State Parks listed below with a LEAP Backpack during the two-week check-out period will also receive free entry for up 2 adults (ages 13 and up) and accompanying children (ages 12 and under).

In collaboration with The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), the LEAP program will also include monthly health and nature education programs coordinated by each host site to promote physical activity, healthy living, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

With the LEAP Backpack*, visit one of the State Parks below, and receive FREE ENTRY for 2 people, ages 13 and up, plus free entry for children, ages 12 & under.
