ENGL 2341: Book Banning Project

This guide was created for Prof. John Dethloff's English 2341 class, Fall 2024.

Assignment

In this project, you will research and summarize the history of book banning in America, as well as the state of book banning in America right now, including Texas.

You will select and read one of the top 10 most challenged books from the American Library Association list provided. You can purchase the book, you can check it out from a local library, or you can check it out from the LSC-Kingwood library. Our library has all 10 books, some available as an e-book for digital check out, and others available as a print book, held at the reserve desk, available for check out.

You will research and explain why the book is one of the most challenged books in America.

You will conduct a primary analysis of the text—that is, the book—wherein you analyze how the author explores sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, culture, or socioeconomic status within the story. You will choose one of these topics.

Based on your analysis, lastly, you will argue and justify why the book is important and should be read by an age-appropriate audience.

You will need approval from me on your book selection.
