Option 2: French Communication Style in Professional Discipline

Visualize yourself as a future professional employed in France. Research the conventions of the French communication style to communicate with supervisors, colleagues, clients, and so on within your discipline/industry.

Questions to consider:

  • How do professionals in your discipline/industry apply genre conventions (e.g., format, tone, writing style) and netiquette conventions to compose professional correspondence such as emails, memos, and letters for French/English speaking audiences?
  • How do the concepts of Direct/Indirect, High Context, Emotionally Expressive, and Formal influence how professionals communicate in-person/virtually and through professional correspondence?
    • The following website applies the concepts of Direct/Indirect, High Context, Emotionally Expressive, and Formal to the French communication style: France (IOR).
    • How is technical communication used within your discipline/industry to communicate across cultures within a global context?

    • How are technical documents (e.g., reports) within your discipline/industry used to accomplish tasks and solve problems?
