Emergency Information (General)

Night Shift Fire Drills

In the event of a fire, fire alarm and fire drill, the night shift Service Desk Part timer has the following responsibilities:

  • Grab the yellow safety vest hanging up on Anne’s wall. (The vest identifies quickly who the fire fighters/police need to talk to about their area and to give ALL CLEAR.)
  • Alert occupants of Learning Commons and facilitate evacuation.
  • If there are at least two part timers: one should move people of out computer labs and breakroom sweeping people up towards the exit; the other part timer begin moving people out from the floor of the LC and show them the exit.
  • Close the workroom door (if you have time.) Closed doors prevent spreading fire. All other doors in the Learning Commons are self-closing.
  • If anyone refuses to leave, do not argue. You may remind them that they may receive a citation from the police if they do not participate. The Part timer with the vest must be ready to inform first responders (police, firemen) that a student refused to leave: Example: “A student, who would not give me his name, wearing a red shirt and jeans refused to leave the Learning Commons silent study Computer Lab at the back of the Learning Commons.”
  • Mobility impaired occupants may require special assistance in the event of an evacuation. It is okay to ask what assistance they may need. (Example: Student on crutches.) Fortunately, we are on first floor.
  • Exit the building and communicate by directing occupants to a safe assembly area outside the building a minimum of 50 feet away from the building. Parking Lot B and Parking Lot A are good locations. However, remind others not to block the Red Fire zone as Fire Trucks need to get there.
  • Report any known conditions on the fire floor (or alarm floor) to the fire department upon their arrival. Example: “Microwave caught fire in the breakroom. Lots of smoke, everyone exited the breakroom, and the breakroom door is closed.”
  • Inform Emergency Responders of anybody left in the building.
  • Follow instructions given by the fire department.
  • Do NOT re-enter the building until notified to do so by the Fire Department/Police. They will give the ALL CLEAR.
  • In the case of an actual fire in the Library, locate the fire alarm pull station next to the entrances/exits of the Library building and set off the alarm. Then, follow the steps above.
  • Ask Anne  if you need any clarification about these instructions or walk thru for practice.

Active Shooter/Lock Down

If there is a real active shooter emergency or Lock Down:

  • Your number one responsibility is to SURVIVE.
  •  Encourage others around you to run to the Computer Labs in the back.
  • In the Computer Lab, push the lockdown button.
  • Use the remote to close the blinds in the Computer Lab.Lock Down button and Remote
  • Turn off the lights in the Computer Lab.
  • Hide behind the computer lab desks and remain quiet.
  • Remember that the computer labs are made to be bullet resistant.
  • Do NOT move from the labs until given the ALL Clear.
  • The police will move from area to area. Stay hidden until the police have secured the area and evacuates you.
  • Keep your hands visible and follow the instructions of the police officers to evacuate.

If a real lockdown occurs during the day, the full timers will:

  • Lock the doors in the foyer of the Learning Commons
  • Turn off all of the lights in the Learning Commons.
  • Lower the blinds throughout the Learning Commons with remote. (There is also another remote on the outside of the computer labs near the breakroom to lower the blinds throughout the Learning Commons.)
  • Make their way back to the Computer Labs. (The Full Timers may be locked out already from the Computer Labs and may have to hide in the Breakroom instead.)
  • Some of the Full Timers may choose to lockdown in their office.

Active Shooter/Lock Down Drills

For the Active Shooter/Lock Down Drills, the Part Time Service Desk employees will “act” as if it is real and perform the following:

  • Remind patrons that if they stay in the Learning Commons, they will be required to participate in the Drill.
  • Go to one of the Computer Labs and let the patrons in.
  • In the Computer Lab, push the lockdown button.
  • Use the remote to close the blinds in the Computer Lab.
  • Turn off the lights in the Computer Lab.
  • Hide behind the computer lab desks and remain quiet.
  • Do NOT move from the labs until given the ALL Clear. For a drill, this may be an announcement over the intercom.
  • When the Active Shooter/Lock Down Drill is over, inform the LC Service Desk Supervisor of anything you felt could have been improved, and if any equipment was faulty, eg. “all of the blinds except one section would not close when I pressed the remote."

  • Lock the doors in the foyer of the Learning Commons
  • Turn out all of the lights in the Learning Commons.

  • Wait for the ALL Clear announcement
  • Get together with the Part timers and discuss the positive and negatives of the Drill and what improvements may be needed.

Tornado Drills

In the absence of the LC Desk Supervisor, for the Tornado drill, a Service Desk Part timer has the following responsibilities:

  • Alert occupants of the Learning Commons 15 minutes before the Drill. eg. “Just letting you know that there is a tornado drill in 15 minutes.  When the alarm goes off, please head to the back to the Computer Labs. Thanks!”
  • When the Tornado drill alarm goes off:  Move people towards the Computer Labs.
  • If anyone refuses to cooperate with the Tornado Drill, do not argue. You may remind them that they may receive a citation from the police if they do not participate.
  • Mobility impaired occupants may require special assistance. It is okay to ask what assistance they may need. (Example: Student on crutches.) Fortunately, we are on first floor.
  • Remind people in the Computer Labs: “If this was an actual tornado, the Computer Lab is the best place to be. The Computer Labs have reinforced walls and no windows.
  • Stay in the Computer Labs until given the “ALL CLEAR.”

In Actual Tornado

  • Your number one responsibility is to SURVIVE.
  •  Encourage others around you to run to the Computer Labs in the back.
  • Remember: The Computer Lab is the best place to be. The Computer Labs have reinforced walls and no windows and is the lowest part of the building. (You can ease panic by reminding others of this.)
  • Crouch face-down and protect your head with your arms. Get under the desks if possible for further protection.
  • Stay in the Computer Labs until given the “ALL CLEAR.” This may be an announcement over the intercom, or text on your phone.
