EDUC 1300 Career Project (Faculty Edition)

This guide was created to help faculty and staff teach the Career Project for EDUC 1300; Summer 2016.

Step 1

Throughout the semester your students have been learning how to be successful at college. Part of that involves doing some personal exploration about themselves; to learn about their own personality, values, and goals.

Your students will tie together what they have learned in their final project as they explore a career of interest. They will write a paper about a career and present their findings to the class.

The first step for your students is for them to do a personal evaluation.

  • Who are they?
  • What is their personality type?
  • What are their values?
  • What are their interests?

This self-knowledge will help shape their career choice. Below are some assessment tools to help them along this process.

Students are REQUIRED to take the “Do What You Are” Career Assessment!

Student Information

Like any journey you may go on, it is useful have a road map. College is a time of discovery and exploration. It is helpful to students to find a field of study and create a map that will help guide them to a fulfilling career and life.

According to CareerFocus:

  • 25% of college freshmen are undecided about their major
  • Over 75% of college students will change their major at least once while in college

For the average person, most of adult life is spent at work. For your students, choosing a career that interests them and then finding a major that will prepare them for that career is of utmost importance. Keeping this in mind will make their college experience more productive and worthwhile.

One reason to look at education and training after high school is because education can influence your full-time employability and salary. The U.S. Department of Labor shares this data from 2019.

"You've got to find what you love. . . Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do."
