Learning Commons Services & Resources

This guide was created to help students and staff learn about the services and resources available through the Learning Commons; May Mini 2015.

What Is Circulation?

Circulation refers to the process of lending and borrowing materials between the library and the library patron.

Circulation In the Learning Commons

Borrowing (or "checking out") Items 

  1. A Lone Star College photo ID is needed to check out all physical materials, including reserve items. Limits may be placed on the number of materials checked out at one time. For information about the Lone Star College ID, visit our ID, Badges, & Library Card page.
     
  2. A 14-digit library barcode is needed to check out or view e-materials and to access the library databases. The library barcode is on the back of your LSC ID card in the upper, right corner, or you can complete this application to request a library barcode.
     
  3. Reference materials and most reserve items are limited to in-house use by students. To see the items we have on reserve, visit the Course Material guide.

Returning (or "checking in") Items 

  1. All materials may be returned to staff at the service desk inside the Learning Commons during open hours, or to the book drop located in the foyer of the Learning Commons near the door facing the courtyard and CLA.
     
  2. Materials borrowed from any Lone Star College System Library, Harris County Public Library, or Montgomery County Memorial Library may be returned to any Lone Star College System Library.
     
  3. Circulating items checked out from Lone Star College-Kingwood can be returned to any Lone Star College System Library, Harris County Public Library, or Montgomery County Library.
     
  4. Reserve items must be returned to the service desk inside the Learning Commons.

Requesting (or "placing a hold on") Items

  1. Materials may be requested from any Lone Star College System Library, Harris County Public Library and Montgomery County Memorial Library System with a valid 14-digit library barcode and pin number. The video below gives details on placing a hold.

     
  2. Other materials needed by students and faculty may be requested from libraries outside the consortium by requesting them online using this Interlibrary Loan Request Form. 
     
  3. Requested items can be sent to any Lone Star College library, Harris County Public Library, or Montgomery County Memorial Library for pick up.

Picking Up Requested Items (or "items on hold")

  1. When requests are received by the pick-up location, the item(s) will be available for pick up for a period of 10 days. If the item is not picked up within 10 days, it will be returned to its home library location.
     
  2. You will need your Lone Star College ID to check out any library items that you have requested and put on hold.

Overdue (or "late") Items and Fines

  1.  Each borrower is responsible for all materials borrowed on his/her library card.
     
  2.  Fines on overdue items are calculated when the item(s) is(are) returned. At Lone Star College-Kingwood, fines have to be paid in full. Partial payment of fines is not accepted. Before paying your fine, check with the Circulation staff at the Service desk in the Learning Commons for the exact fee owed.
     
  3. If checked out items are overdue, check out privileges are suspended and academic records may be placed on hold until overdue materials are turned in and fines are cleared.
     
  4. Fines can be paid through the Lone Star College-Kingwood Store Front with a credit card or at the Business Office with cash. Always check with the Circulation staff before paying the fine to verify the amount owed.
     
  5. The borrower is responsible for any damaged, lost or stolen materials. The charges will be the cost of replacing the item. Check with the Library Services Coordinator for the replacement cost. Payment can be made through the Lone Star College-Kingwood Store Front with a credit card or in the Business Office with cash. (Bring receipt, if paying cash, to the Library to clear the Library record.)
