The novel is a longstanding literary institution, and the 19th and early 20th century in England saw a proliferation of lengthy fiction books, many of which have been placed on “Greatest Novel of All Time” lists. This semester, you will choose ONE of the following essential novels, read it independently and then work with it. You will work on this book ALL semester, so I suggest that you pick one that you are interested in.

All are available for free online. If you want to buy the book, and use it for reference, you can. You are not required to purchase this book, however.

Choices:
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
Thomas Hardy, Jude the Obscure
Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre
Wilkie Collins, The Moonstone
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
Ford Maddox Ford, The Good Soldier
