Short Research Assignment 4

In the 19th and 20th centuries, England engaged in a massive, worldwide imperial project. One of the continents they colonized was Africa. You’ve already learned about the definitions/concepts of imperialism and colonialism as they pertain to India. For this research project, you will look into the British colonization of Africa and think about how the literature below reflects and critiques colonial ideas.

  1. Conduct research on the British colonization of Africa.
  2. Read both “A Civil Peace” and “The Sacrificial Egg” (linked in D2L) by Chinua Achebe.
  3. Reflect on how these stories respond to colonial ideas.

Requirements:

  • Paragraph 1: Report on the British colonization of Africa (essential information/context etc.)
  • Paragraph 2: Informational paragraph on Chinua Achebe/summaries/overviews of the two short stories.
  • Paragraphs 3-4: Compare/contrast the two short stories.
