LC Service Desk Scenarios

The purpose of this guide is to provide consistency, kindness, and professionalism while maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all patrons and staff in the Learning Commons.

Messy Eaters in the LC

Scenario: A group of students brought their lunches into the Learning Commons to have a collaborative study session in the Mediascape.  They are not disturbing other patrons with their noise; however, they are making a mess in the space by spilling food and drink, dropping their candy wrappers on the floor, and wiping their hands on the seats. What do you do?

  1. Interrupt politely: Apologize for interrupting their study session and acknowledge that it's going well.
  2. Introduce the cleaning station: Inform them about the cleaning station and emphasize the importance of keeping the space tidy.
  3. Provide cleaning supplies: Hand them Lysol/Clorox wipes and paper towels, explaining their use for cleaning surfaces and hands.
  4. Explain the rules: Mention that food and drink are allowed but patrons must clean up after themselves to maintain the space.
  5. Offer assistance: Let them know they can ask for additional cleaning materials at the Service Desk.
  6. Thank them: Preemptively thank them for their cooperation in keeping the space clean.

    Say:

Hey everyone, sorry to interrupt your study session.  It looks like it’s going well! Just a quick reminder—This is a shared space, and while you’re absolutely welcome to have food and drinks here, we do ask that everyone helps keep it clean.  We have a cleaning station available nearby with wipes and other supplies if you need them. Here are some wipes to get you started. If you need anything else, feel free to come to the Service Desk-we’re happy to assist.  Thanks so much for your help in keeping the area clean. We really appreciate it!”
