Technology Manual

LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes in Brightspace (D2L). It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. If a Brightspace test requires that Respondus LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Brightspace quizzes. It should not be used in other areas of Brightspace.

Students access LockDown browser by clicking the Launch LockDown Browser button on their Quiz description/instructions within their D2L course. If LockDown Browser stops while a student is taking a test, they need to call OTS, (281)318-4357, so that it can be officially documented.

Currently (Fall 2024), only the laptops in the kiosk are set to allow students to install LockDown Browser. The various types of LockDown Browser should all be loaded on the laptops, but updates are done often. Students are to try launching LockDown Browser first. If it doesn't work, then they can install the program to the laptop. This will only work on the kiosk laptops, not the PCs or MACs.

Most of the above links can be found in the Student Virtual Learning Assistance Center (VLAC). Students can access VLAC through their D2L. As employees we have Virtual Teaching Assistance Center (VTAC) through D2L. For quizzes, VTAC has help guides for creating quizzes for instructors. However, we often need to help students with installing or launching LockDown Browser. Guides for this are found in VLAC. Follow these instruction to access VLAC through the VTAC Support home page.

  1. Log in to D2L (or click on this Link and then jump to step 4)
  2. Click VTAC Support at the top, in the blue menu bar
  3. Under Learning, in the "For Students" box, click on Virtual Learning Assistance Center (VLAC) - This will pull up what the students have access to
  4. Click the caret next to Quizzes in the Blue menu on the left. This will list several helpful guides.
  5. Click the caret next to Proctoring to access guides on how to install, use, proctor LockDown browser.

I have only linked some of the articles in this guide. You may find some of the other articles in VLAC beneficial.
