Technology Manual

Students must have a valid library card/student ID in order to check out a laptop from the vending machine.

Borrow

  1. Accept the user agreement.
  2. Scan your library card, the long barcode on the back of your student ID. Or enter the student ID number. Typing the number is not encouraged. Preferred method of check out is for student to scan their library barcode on the back of their Student ID card.
  3. Enter library card pin number. (Typically the last four digits of the phone number provided when one got an ID)
  4. Take the laptop that ejects from the machine.

Return

  1. Place laptop in any empty slot. Does not have to be from the same slot that it popped out from.
  2. Follow the prompts on the screen: let us know if there are any problems with the laptop.
  3. Upon finalizing the questionnaire, the laptop will be officially returned.

Laptop Kiosk

  •          Laptops may be borrowed for up to 4 hours.
  •          Must be a current Lone Star College-Kingwood student with an active LSC-ID, ages 14 and up.
  •          If there is a problem with the computer, return the laptop and make note of the issue on the check-in screen.
  •          Any work saved on the laptops will be erased upon return to the kiosk.
  •          Users agree to comply with Lone Star College computer use policy.
  •          Laptops returned past their due time will be fined $5 an hour.
  1. Wait to see if someone returns.
  2. Bring it to the circulation team.
  3. The circulation team will try to contact the person.

Remember, the first route to solving any IT problem will always be to try turning it off and on again.

BLACK SCREEN

  1. Press the Power Button to turn the laptop on.
  2. Try a hard reboot by holding the power button down for a minute until the HP logo appears.
  3. If it does not turn on:
    • Note the laptop's number (KC-LT-L100-##) and email Allison. Please state the problem in the email.
    •  Instruct the student to return the laptop to the kiosk. Make sure the student answers the prompt about a problem with the laptop. Have them check out a new one.

UNABLE TO LOG IN

This is generally an easy fix.

  1. Verify that they are using and typing their user name and password correctly. The user name is their LSC email address. For students it will end in @my.lonestar.edu.
  2. If the student is sure they have typed the information correctly, plug the blue ethernet cable, located at the Tech Help station, into the laptop and have the student log in.
  3. If neither of these steps work:
    • Note the laptop's number (KC-LT-L100-##) and email Allison. Please state the problem in the email.
    • Instruct the student to return the laptop to the kiosk. Make sure the student answers the prompt about a problem with the laptop. Have them check out a new one.

LAPTOP IS LOCKED

All this means is that the previous user did not sign-out. On the log in screen, go to the bottom left corner and click on "Other User". Now the student can sign in. If they have trouble, connect the laptop to the blue ethernet cable.

LOST THE USE OF THE TOUCHPAD

Double-tap the top left corner of the touchpad to turn it back on.
