Learning Commons Manual & Resources

Basic service animal facts:

1.   Service animals are only dogs or in limited circumstances miniature horses. No other type of animal can be a service animal.

2.  If a person says that their dog is a service animal and it is not clear what task the animal is performing (i.e. it isn’t a guide dog for a blind person), then we are legally allowed to ask 2 questions:

  a. Is this a service dog required because of a disability?

  b. What work or task has it been individually trained to perform?

3.  Some people don’t quite understand what “work” or “task” means, so it can be helpful to have someone like the campus Disability Services Manager provide feedback on whether the answer was appropriate if the questions were asked by an alternate staff member. For example, “providing comfort” is not a task. Tasks would be something like “the dog licks my hand to alert me to XXX” (blood sugar being low, impending seizure, etc.). Or “the dog picks up items that I drop and brings them to me.”

4.  In Texas, service dogs in training are provided the same access as fully trained service animals, as long as they can meet behavioral standards and are with a qualified handler.

5.  All service dogs and service dogs in training must meet appropriate behavioral standards.

6.  What to discuss with individuals when they have an animal and the two questions have already been asked:

  a. Unless the individual’s disability prevents it or the work or task is not possible while leashed, the dog should be leashed and under the handler’s control at all times.  This means that the dog must go with them everywhere, to the restroom, class, the student center, etc. and should never be left alone (i.e. a professor should not leave the dog in their office unattended).

  b. The dog must not be disruptive to the learning/working environment.

  c. No aggressive behavior toward people or other animals – no biting, snapping, snarling, growling, lunging or barking.

  d. No sniffing merchandise or people or intruding into another’s space while on duty.

  e. Works calmly on leash. No unruly behavior or unnecessary vocalizations in public settings.

   f. No urinating or defecating in public unless given a specific command or signal to the toilet in an appropriate place.

Public patrons may use the library computers and print using the HCPL or MCPL card number.

The password requirements for Activating Borrower’s Card have also changed. Instead of a 4-digit pin, users are now required to enter at least an 8 character long password that meets 3 of the 4 criteria:

  •          Contains an uppercase letter
  •          Contains a lowercase letter

Other guests without a public library card must have a temporary account created at the ADA service desk station. Guests must present a driver's license.

After the Guest Access account is created and approved, which includes clicking the box email credentials,  the guest will receive the following email:

Thank you for registering with the Lone Star College guest account system. Here is your username. You may use this account to log into Lone Star College general use computers or the wireless network with the name "LoneStar".

Username: GST-___________

This account will automatically delete after 14 days of inactivity. Please do not save any critical files to our system.

The username seems to be a variation of their name with GST- in front of it. If they type their name all in lower case, then their username will be all in lower case.

The password is created exclusively by the guest and not visible to approvers nor is it emailed.  The guest will have to remember what password they created.

UHD students have free printing with their tuition.

SERVICES

UHD Computer Lab is located in CLA 104

Hours: Monday - Thursday 4:00 - 9:00

Students are welcome to use the Library space and computers. Direct them to their assigned lab for FREE printing. A lab assistant is always present to help them in CLA 104.

If a UHD student shows up earlier than the lab is open or on a Friday you can direct them over to the Advisor’s office in Admissions/Advising Area. They need to ask for Mandy Danley (281-318-4339, Danleym@uhd.edu, SCC 159) at the Advising front desk during regular business hours and she should be able to assist them.

If they show up on a Saturday they would either need to come back on another day if they don’t want to pay for printing and if they insist on printing that day they would need to pay for the services.

Dual credit and early college students are registered Lone Star students. They have the same rights and privileges as our regular students.

They are encouraged to get a public library card to check out material due to system registration technicalities with expiration dates.

  • All teachers should be Lone Star Employees.
  • Access provided to dual credit school librarians. Listed in Symphony as High School Librarian (Aug 1 - June 1).

--FT. Librarians: Send flyer and information to high school librarians at the start of the school year. (In the marketing folder on the G drive)

Board policy states that minors are not allowed in computer labs. Minors are not permitted to be on any LC computers or use our Laptops.

Children are supposed to be with their parents or guardian. Contact the police if the minor is unaccompanied.
